Barefoot has collaborated with Google and ONF to showcase P4-programmable Tofino Ethernet switches running Google’s tor.p4 program controlled by the ONOS controller via P4 Runtime in October, and now, as a founding member of the Stratum project, Barefoot is excited to see the industry support behind the project continue to grow, Barefoot is a pioneer in taking the concepts of Software-Defined Networking all the way to the forwarding plane with P4 and P4-programmable Tofino series of Ethernet switches enabling radical new use cases for Hyperscalers, Service Providers and Enterprises. We are quite thrilled to be one of the founding members of the NG-SDN initiative and Stratum project creating a complete,  scalable, end-to-end solution for network operators enabling them to achieve the scale and agility that will be required to deliver next-generation solutions and services.

Today, we take it for granted that network operators choose and customize the control plane software for their network; the largest cloud providers and service providers have made the leap already.  Stratum takes things one step further and hands them the keys to the forwarding plane too. I believe the network should be as easy to program as a server. By lifting protocols out of hardware and into software, we will unleash a Cambrian explosion of innovation in networking, just as we have seen in compute. Because of its use of P4Runtime, Stratum opens the door for every network operator to tailor their network to best meet their needs, while benefiting from a rich open-source ecosystem and a choice of silicon providers.

Xilinx is excited to be a founder member of the open source Stratum project, working together with industry-leading partners spanning cloud operators, telecom providers, equipment vendors, and other chip vendors.  This Next-Generation SDN initiative centers on programmable network data planes, addressing the shortcomings of original SDN around fixed protocol sets and lack of line-rate packet processing performance. For example, providing data center NFV services like vOLT and vBNG means that network devices need to be capable of flexible L2/L3 processing, stream classification, OvS, and VXLAN/NVGRE offload at 100/200G packet rates. The provision of Stratum capabilities on Xilinx P4-programmable FPGA-based platforms will provide the required enhanced performance hardware for SmartNIC and switching equipment that has the dynamic configuration and operation capabilities required by operators.
